So, as you know Nine to Five the MOVIE has been turned into a Broadway MUSICAL. And that it is coming to the Marquis Theatre for previews on March 24, 2009, and officially opening on April 23, 2009! Just in time for the Tony nominations.

I think that this show is going to be genius! One of the songs is called "Backwoods Barbie." (which is also what Dolly's latest album is titled)

It's progressive and I think it actually represents the score, not just the hype. No seriously she can sing like crazy, and the fact that she isn't "a Star, aaaAAHH STAR!"(s. alan) is a stupid crime of musical theatre treason!

She sang a new song by composers Scott Burkell and Paul Loesel, whom let me just take a moment to talk about these guys, these two are probably writing some of the most amazing and smart songs in musical theatre today, I was completely blow away by the catalog that they presented at the Duplex, Amazing!

But she sang this new song called "1904" and it was so incredible that I was in tears, she is truly someone to watch and I can't wait to see her perform again.

Oh yeah she is going to be making her Broadway Debut in Godspell but this is just the Beginning!

So I wonder what he has that is better than a Lead in a Broadway Show, a pilot? a feature in a movie? a career without the help of a TV show that was cast by America and therefore cast a Doody as Danny? I don't know, lets hope it is something that only calls for a limited range, unlike someone else from that show who is very very talented and has a lot of range in what she can do . . . . . . no not Laura.

Rent the Movie, FOR REAL THIS TIME!

according to playbill . . .

"The final performance of the Pulitzer and Tony-winning musical Rent, scheduled for Sept. 7 at the Nederlander Theatre, will be filmed for future screenings in movie theatres around the country.

The filming is part of a new business venture launched by Sony Pictures Releasing, which is entitled The Hot Ticket. The Hot Ticket, according to a press release, will "distribute event programming, including popular music concerts, the performing arts, and sporting events in high definition digital projection to select movie theaters nationwide."

In addition to the final performance, the Rent filming will also "feature special closing night extras, when original cast members of the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical are expected to join and celebrate in the farewell festivities." Screening dates in the U.S. and in Canada have yet to be announced, although Hot Ticket presentations will be shown in strictly limited engagements in 2K and 4K digital theatres."

I'M BUYING IT!

All us rent heads wanted was a live movie version of the stage show and we are finally getting one, THANK GOD!

I've got a 'Screw Loose' for Cry Baby!

So, word on the street was that I was going to HATE Cry Baby and that it was a big ol' mess and I would want to leave at intermission.

Well . . . folks, I think that this si a case of seeing a show in previews and then seeing it once it has settled down and really become a fun and throughly entertaining night at the theatre. I thought the performances were great, I liked the songs, I thought that there was some fun and new characters being portrayed very well not only by the leads but most of the supporting cast.

Is the show perfect? No
Are there problems? Yes
Does it matter? NOHIGHLIGHTS!!!

1)The choreography by Rob Asford was AMAZING!!! and the ensemble executes it to perfection, there was a damn Ballet! Get it Done!

2)Alli Mauzey (Lenora) Gives a show stealing performance. Her choices are quirky and exactly what the show needs. This role could have been a crazy mess but she plays it with such skill that I can't believe that she wasn't acknowledged. "Screw Loose" is probably one of the funniest things I have ever seen on stage in a long time. I was dying, she has the acting to support a character like this and the vocal ability to make the whole thing work. I loved her and can't wait to see what she will do in the future.

3)Elizabeth Stanley's HIGH Mix Belt. period

4) Chester Gregory II gives you some stupid vocals through out the entire show, he is yes the token high High HIGH tenor black guy in a 50's musical, AKA All Shook Up, Grease Revival 1994. He gives you some, I don't even know, full voice B's or higher. just stupid.

5) Carly Jibson gives a hilarious performance and a fierce vocal.

and the list goes on.

So, if you want to have fun and enjoy yourself, or just see a musical unlike any other on Broadway right now, go see Cry Baby and those of you who HATED THIS MUSICAL, I would challenge you to see it again and get off your high horse and open your mind to something that IS shocking and raunchy, yet new and exciting. Who new that could still happen?

I personally would see it again and am going to buy the cast album. Great performances, great songs, Great Choreo, Fun and innovative lyrics. I'm infected!

I know, I know the nominations came out like 3 days ago but I needed time to actually take it in.
The VERDICT? SLOW YEAR

We are going to have some "Best Choreo goes to Annie(1977)" this year.
They are kinda a mess. Even though I love Xanadu and I actually really liked Cry Baby they aren't going to be the ones that are going to win. Passing Strange or In The Heights are going to win unless they continue with the "Which Musical will profit more at my theatre on a national tour" i.e.

Fosse winning over Parade (1999)
Spamalot winning over Light In The Piazza(2005)
Jersey Boys winning over The Drowsy Chaperone(2006)

I think Xanadu should just win just because it should never win. . . but actually has a chance!

The Revivals on the other hand are FIERCE! I think South Pacific gets it because Gypsy was just here and Gypsy will win Best Actress and Best Director.

I don't know but what happened to A Catered Affair, why wasn't this show at least nominated for Best Musical? it is very confusing.

If you weren't there then you missed a night of FIERCE singing. Highlights include Kate Shindle singing "A Simple Plan" and Julie Reyburn* singing, "Do You Want My Life?" But the 11 O'Clock number was when NATALIE WEISS ripped Shoshana's song, "House of Love," a new one. This was truly a fierce vocal that she gave us. Can't wait for someone to post this on youtube. It will be on the DISH in a second!

Well I have a little dish to talk about. I have been seeing a lot of new and unproduced shows/revues since I have been here, AKA WORKS IN PROGRESS! Well the one thing that keeps happeneing to me is that I am not seeing people selling what they have. I want FULL OUT, NO MARKING and if you can't do that then stop trying to "help" others by doing them an injustice by performing your half ass, hungry, "mixed?" belt love songs that need a real singer to even make them a filler on a songs of weber volume 6 cd on clearance. . . at the dollar general!

Lets look at Lizzy Berk for a second. The one thing that makes her sorry ass enjoyable is the fact that, yes she is lacking in talent but she has star quality AKA, SHE DOESN"T MARK!

So please if you get the opportunity to sing or perform for any one, wheather it be on broadway, at a first hearing of a new work, in front of the composer and then not knowing the lyrics, or on the subway infront of a blind half naked homeless man doing the opening scene from cats!
